Original Finish – Heritage Natural Finish
Heritage’s Original Finish is the go-to choice for nearly any wood surface. From timbers, logs, and trim to tongue-and-groove paneling or fine furniture, this versatile finish brings out the natural character of wood while providing long-lasting protection.
Its balanced formula is thin enough to soak in quickly yet contains a high level of solids for a rich, water-resistant coating. Two coats deliver a warm matte look, while additional layers, buffing, or a top coat of Liquid Wax End Sealer can increase the sheen and durability. Application is flexible—use a brush, roller, rag, lamb’s wool pad, or sprayer depending on your project.
Like all Heritage oils, Original Finish is completely non-toxic, biodegradable, and sustainable. With no heavy metals or chemical driers, it penetrates deeply for even drying and lasting results, though it requires a longer curing time than conventional finishes.
Coverage
- Roughly 350 sq. ft. per gallon (or 500 board feet)
- Absorption depends on wood type: softer species like pine or reclaimed fir take in more oil, while dense woods like hickory require less
- Second coats cover more area than the first
- Dry wood soaks up more oil than green timbers—plan accordingly and order extra to ensure coverage
Application in Cold Weather
There’s no minimum temperature requirement, but cooler conditions slow penetration and drying. Apply thinner coats, wipe away any excess after a few hours, and allow additional drying time before recoating.
Cleanup
Clean brushes, pads, or spills with Pure Citrus Solvent, turpentine, mineral spirits, or a similar solvent.
Additional Protection
For outdoor projects or exposed wood, treating surfaces with a borate solution before applying Original Finish adds an extra layer of defense against insects.
